PHYSIOTHERAPY · SHELLHARBOUR

A shoulder that will not let you reach, lift or sleep?

Shoulder pain gets between you and everything: training, work, hobbies, even a decent night’s sleep. At RX Physiotherapy in Shellharbour we work out why your shoulder stopped coping, settle it down, and rebuild the strength that keeps it out of trouble.

THE CAUSES

What causes shoulder pain?

Most shoulder pain comes from tissue being asked for more than it can currently give. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in your body, which also makes it the least stable; it rarely breaks, it simply stops coping. The common drivers we see:

Rotator cuff weakness

The small stabilising muscles fatigue, and the joint stops feeling secure.

Shoulder blade control

When the blade moves poorly, everything attached to it works harder.

Overload without recovery

Volume or overhead work that arrived faster than the tissue was ready for.

Posture and mobility restrictions

Stiff upper backs and desk-shaped days feed sore shoulders.

Instability after falls or sport

A joint that has been stretched or knocked needs retraining, not just rest.

Old injuries, unfinished rehab

Pain settled with rest once, but the strength underneath it never came back.

OUR APPROACH

How we treat shoulder pain at RX.

Manual therapy to restore movement, targeted strength work for the cuff and shoulder blade, and education on posture and load, tailored to the actual cause rather than the sore spot.

01

Assess and explain

A comprehensive first appointment: your history, your movement and what is driving the pain. You leave with a clear diagnosis, a written plan and exercises in our app with video demos.

02

Settle and restore

Hands-on treatment where it helps: massage, dry needling, cupping and joint techniques to release guarded muscles and restore comfortable range.

03

Rebuild strength

Progressive loading for the rotator cuff, shoulder blade and posterior chain, so lifting gets smoother and the joint feels stable again.

04

Stay ahead of it

Education on posture, ergonomics and training structure, periodic check-ins, and the whole centre available when you want structure.

PROFICIENCY AND SELF-MANAGEMENT

Treatment that teaches you to need us less.

Our physiotherapists see a lot of shoulders, and the pattern is consistent: the people who do best understand their condition and own their plan. So education is built into every appointment. You will know what your diagnosis means, what to do when it flares, how to keep training around it, and exactly what your next step is. Appointments are a means to an end, and the end is you managing it with confidence.

FAQ

Questions people ask about shoulder pain.

It depends on the diagnosis and how long it has been going on. After your first assessment you get a written plan with a realistic timeframe, and we reassess as you progress.

Usually not. Most shoulder pain can be assessed and treated without imaging, and scans often show changes that are normal for your age. If imaging is needed, we will tell you and coordinate with your GP.

Yes. Both respond well to the right combination of hands-on treatment, graded loading and patience, and we will explain exactly what to expect from each stage.

Shoulders thrive on the right load, gradually built. Complete rest lets the stabilising muscles weaken, so the joint copes even less when you return. Graded loading works better than waiting.

When your rotator cuff gets stronger the joint feels stable, when your shoulder blade control improves lifting gets smoother, and when your posterior chain strengthens, posture improves without you forcing it.

Usually yes, with modifications. We program around your shoulder, keep what you can train, and rebuild what you cannot yet.
