ABOUT RX ACTIVE HEALTH
A physio practice and a gym, built as one system.
Powered by Hustle Hut Health
Most people get treated in one building and trained in another, by people who never speak. RX Active Health puts the whole thing under one roof: assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, strength, recovery and testing, run by one team.
THE SYSTEM
One body, one continuous plan.
Getting out of pain and getting strong are not two separate projects. They are the same project at different stages. So we built one place that covers all of it, and one team that runs it end to end.
01
Assess
We work out what is actually happening, not just where it hurts. History, movement, and objective testing where it helps.
02
Treat
Hands-on treatment and targeted exercise, in the order your body needs them.
03
Rehabilitate
Small group, supervised programs that progress. The bridge between treatment and training.
04
Strengthen
A fully equipped 24/7 gym on the same floor, with trainers who can read your rehab plan.
05
Recover
Infrared sauna, cold plunge and private recovery rooms. Recovery is part of training, not a reward for it.
06
Test and retest
VALD performance testing, so progress is measured rather than assumed.
Nobody has to be the translator between their physio and their trainer any more.
That job used to fall to you, usually at the point you had the least energy for it.
THE FOUNDERS
We did not just share our lives, we shared a vision.
April Patterson and Taryn Laughlin built RX Active Health together. Over late night conversations and early morning coffees they kept arriving at the same frustration, from two different sides of the same problem.
“I was tired of watching people chase quick fixes.”
Dr April Patterson
Co-founder and physiotherapist. Doctor of Physiotherapy, Bond University.
“And I was exhausted seeing clients measure success only by what is visible in the mirror.”
Taryn Laughlin
Co-founder, strength and conditioning coach, personal trainer.
What was missing
People were being treated in one building and trained in another, by two teams who never spoke. Rehabilitation would finish and training would start from scratch. Training would push past what a body was ready for and send someone back to the clinic. Short term transformations looked good and then quietly came apart.
April saw it from the clinical side, in the people who arrived after their third attempt at getting better. Taryn saw it from the gym floor, in the people who worked hard and still measured themselves against a mirror rather than what their body could do.
Why clinical care and strength belong together
Getting out of pain and getting strong are not two separate projects. Rehabilitation that never becomes training stalls, and training without clinical guardrails sends people back to the start. The handover between the two is where most people lose their progress, and it was the part nobody owned.
So they stopped treating it as a handover. April brought the clinical direction, Taryn brought the strength, fitness and performance side, and they built one centre where both sit on the same floor and the same team talks about the same person.
What they wanted to change
The philosophy is simple enough to say in a sentence and hard enough to build that most places do not: your healthspan should match your lifespan. Not a shorter time feeling capable than the time you are alive. That means measuring success by how fully someone lives rather than how they look, and building for the decade ahead rather than the next six weeks.
April also built the practice she needed herself. She lives with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, hypermobility and TMJ dysfunction, and she knows what it is like to be told your scans are clear, to be handed advice that does not fit your body, and to be quietly filed as a difficult case. That is why RX is known for the presentations other clinics find tricky.
SEE HOW IT WORKS
The RX Method, explained.
THE RX METHOD
Ever left a physio visit unsure what the actual plan was?
You should leave your first appointment with a diagnosis you understand and a plan you can follow. That is the RX Method: seven steps that take you from understanding the problem, to rebuilding capacity, to becoming stronger and more resilient than where you started.
Understand
Assess
Measure
Plan
Rebuild
Strengthen
Recover
01
Understand you
Before we assess your body, we understand you. We get clear on your history, your symptoms, your lifestyle, your goals and what your body needs to get back to doing. The better we understand the full picture, the better we can build the right pathway forward.
Your story first. Then the strategy.
02
Find the problem
We do not just look at where it hurts. We assess how your whole system is working together to uncover what may be limiting your movement, strength and performance. Depending on how you present, we may assess:
- Movement patterns and compensations, how your body adapts and works around restrictions
- Strength and physical capacity, where you are strong and how much load you tolerate
- Mobility, stability and control, how your joints move and respond under load
- Balance, coordination and body control
- Functional and performance demands for your sport, work and everyday life
- Specialised systems including jaw and TMJ function, pelvic health and hypermobility
03
Measure it
We do not rely only on what we can see or feel. Using VALD performance technology we objectively measure your strength, movement and physical capacity to uncover deficits that assessment alone may not reveal. That gives us a clear baseline, measurable targets and data we can retest over time, so you can see your progress rather than just feel it.
No guesswork. Real data. Measurable progress.
04
Build your plan
Your results become your roadmap. Everything we learn from your assessment and testing turns into a personalised rehabilitation plan built around your body, your goals and where you want to get back to. From the beginning you will understand what we are working on, why it matters and what success looks like. As you progress we reassess, retest and refine.
Personalised from day one. Refined with data. Built to move you forward.
05
Rebuild and restore
This is where the plan turns into real world capacity. We match you with the right level of support to rebuild strength, restore confidence and progressively return you to the things you want to do. Your pathway may include:
- Physiotherapy guided rehabilitation
- Small group rehabilitation classes
- Trainer guided rehabilitation
- Gym and Pilates based rehabilitation
Rebuild what is missing. Restore what matters. Progress with purpose.
06
Build strength and confidence
This is where rehabilitation becomes resilience. We move beyond managing symptoms and start building the strength, control and physical capacity your body needs to perform with confidence. Through supervised training we develop strength, stability, movement quality, physical capacity and confidence. The goal is bigger than getting you out of pain.
Do not just recover. Build beyond where you started.
07
Recover better
Recovery is part of the process, not an afterthought. Support your rehabilitation and training with our dedicated recovery facilities, including the infrared sauna and cold plunge, giving you more ways to reset, recover and prepare for what comes next.
Train hard. Recover well. Keep progressing.
What makes the RX Method different is that everything works together. Physiotherapy. Objective VALD testing. Rehabilitation. Personal training. Gym. Pilates. Classes. Recovery. Not separate services. One connected pathway, one clear plan, and one goal: helping you move better, get stronger and trust your body again.
We help train the next cohort.
RX Active Health hosts Bachelor of Exercise Science student placements from the University of Wollongong, and has done for several years. April is also a stakeholder in the development of UOW’s Masters of Physiotherapy program, with the first students expected from 2028.

FAQS
Questions people ask before their first appointment.
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist?
No. You can book directly with a physiotherapist without a GP referral. However, a referral will be required if you are claiming through Medicare, WorkCover, or some private health insurers.
What conditions do physiotherapists treat?
Physiotherapists assess and treat a wide range of conditions including back and neck pain, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, arthritis, nerve pain, balance issues, and chronic pain conditions. We also focus on injury prevention, strength, mobility, and long-term function.
Here at RX Active Health, we have clinicians who specialise in Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD), hypermobility, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS), post-operative rehabilitation, golf assessment, strength and conditioning, endurance sports and women's health.
What should I expect in my first appointment?
Your first appointment includes a detailed assessment of your injury or concern, discussion of your goals, physical examination, and a personalised treatment plan. Treatment may include hands-on therapy (such as massage, cupping, taping or dry needling), exercise prescription, education, rehabilitation programming and self-management strategies.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and access to the area being treated (for example, shorts for knee or hip pain, a singlet for shoulder issues). You may be asked to change into shorts if required.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on your condition, goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some people improve in a few sessions, while others with more complex or long-term conditions may benefit from ongoing support. Your physiotherapist will discuss expected timeframes with you.
Can I claim physiotherapy through private health insurance?
Yes. Most private health funds cover physiotherapy under extras cover. You can usually claim on the spot using HICAPS, depending on your level of cover.
How long are physiotherapy appointments?
Appointment lengths vary depending on the type of consultation.
General initial assessments: 40 minutes
Hypermobility & EDS initial: 60 minutes
NDIS physiotherapy: 60 minutes
General follow-up: 30 minutes
Extended follow-up: 40 to 60 minutes
Dry needling: 15 minutes
